In the colonial days, 9 of the 13 states must approve an amendment before it becomes ratified. Delaware was the first state to ratify the Constitution, while Rhode Island would be the last.
After a heated debate, it was argued that 10 amendments would be added to the new Constitution. These new constitutional amendments would go on to become the Bill of Rights.
Some of these amendments were no cruel and unusual punishment, a right to a speedy trial, and the right to bear arms. The most used amendment is the 1st amendment, the freedom of speech, press, religion, assembly and petition.
The Constitution became the law in 1789. The Bill of Rights were added a year later in 1790.
Without the foresight of our founding fathers, we would not be the country we are today. We may still have been under British rule.
